21st May Salters’ Chemistry Festival (P7-S1): For information contact b.hill@chem.gla.ac.uk 9th June ‘Fantastic Forces’ + Lord Kelvin Exhibition (S1-S2): Interactive lecture exploring forces together with a visit to the Huntarian Museum.

13th June Biology Fair (S1-S2): Visit packed full of interactive biology activities with a focus on human biology. Activity sponsored by the West of Scotland WHAN.

Upper Secondary

2nd June ‘Be a Biology Student’ (S3-S6): Biology Laboratory Activities and Interactive Lecture. 2nd June ‘Be a Chemistry Student’ (S3-S4): ‘CSI River City’ laboratory activities + Interactive Lecture.

3rd June ‘Be a Chemistry Student’ (S3-S4): ‘CSI River City’ laboratory activities + Expedition to the Artic talk.

CSI River City: A criminal has been caught red handed having broken into a house. He claims he was never in the area! Luckily he has collected a range of materials in the tread of his trainers. Using the kit provided, you must decide the best way to test these materials to identify them based on their physical and chemical properties and prove he was in the area.

Expedition to the Arctic: Dr Simon Boxall, Cape Farewell Artic Expedition crew, has monitored ocean environments in force 11 swell, complete calm, from the air, space and underwater - tracking and monitoring pollution and environmental impact. Cape Farewell brings artists and scientists together to bring about long-term change in attitudes towards climate change.

10th June ‘Be a Physics Student’ (S3-S6) Physics Laboratory Activities + ‘Seeing is Believing’ lecture demonstration.

11th June ‘Be a Psychology Student’ (S3-S6) Psychology Dept Activity + ‘Seeing is Believing’ lecture demonstration.

Seeing is Believing The Royal Institution Lecture. Did you know that black can be lighter than white? Or that mixing red and green makes yellow? With one mind-boggling demonstration after another, this talk explores these and other mysteries of vision. The talk will cover the eye, binocular vision, colour vision, vision in other creatures, balance, and more besides.

12th June Engineering Visit (S3-S4) The Royal Institution Lecture, ‘Fabulous Forces’. The presentation is jam-packed with experiments, demonstrations, and the odd explosion! How does a rocket move in space when there’s nothing to push against? How can you make artificial gravity? The talk will cover Newton’s Laws, centre of mass and balance, conservation of momentum, gravity, orbits, friction, and pressure. The talk will be accompanied by a chance to learn about engineering research at the University of Glasgow.

Computing Science. This project aims to provide teaching resources to enhance Computing and Information Systems courses. A series of lesson-length workshops are available that use everyday technology such as mobile phones and the web as a way in to explaining course content. We aim to highlight the Computer Science that is now all around us. Workshops have been used in S1 to S6 classes. You can ask us to visit your school to present workshops, sign up for CPD sessions if you'd like assistance in presenting them yourself, or else access the workshop materials on the web directly and get right on with it! Contact http://csi.dcs.gla.ac.uk/index.php to request a visit.

19th June University of Glasgow Open Day (S5-S6) Prospective undergraduates can speak to staff, find out more about courses, tour the facilities, visit accommodation and see what life would be like as a student. School representatives who wish to bring along a group of students should register here.
